Design Brief

Design Brief

For this project, the designer is designing a personal water vehicle intended for one or multiple users. The goal is to create a high-quality 3D model with smooth G2 continuity and detailed features including hardware, seams, and micro-textures. After conducting quick product research and developing concept sketches, the designer will model the design in Rhino and render it in Blender using custom materials and well-lit scenes.

Inspirations

The inspiration for the Wanderer Raft comes from the feeling evoked by the images above. I wanted to create a product that stands apart from what’s currently available on the market, despite targeting the same audience—young adults.

Most existing products cater to a more masculine, aggressive aesthetic, designed for intense water sports. This leaves little room for casual users who seek a more relaxed, leisurely experience. In contrast, my design embraces a calming, earthy aesthetic—moving away from loud and extreme styling. The Wanderer Raft is intended for lounging and light exploration, offering a softer, more inviting alternative for users who want to enjoy time on the water in a laid-back, stylish way.

Ideation

During the ideation phase, I focused on incorporating key features commonly found in other rafts to make the Wanderer Raft more inviting and suitable for small groups. I also prioritized essential safety elements. One of the first ideas was a clear floor, allowing users to see the water beneath them—adding a sense of connection to nature. I also included a cooler and cupholder combination for added convenience and comfort, and designed the layout to comfortably seat up to four people, making it perfect for socializing and shared experiences on the water.
